LOCATION: The National Highway 22 from Shimla passes through Narkanda, Rampur, Jeori, Karcham, etc. and enters into Kinnaur District further east. From Jeori the link road goes up gaining altitude to 2185 M to Sarahan (17 KM) via Gharat. Normally the tourists prefer this route because of availability of many public transport. . Sarahan is situated on the mountain slope of southern side of river Sutlej and facing the Srikhand Mahadev peak on the north. The distance from Shimla is 160 KM.

 

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: In the past, Sarahan was the summer capital of the Bhushyr kingdom.Bhimakali Temple, SarahanExcepting in the winter months, the climate remains comfortable. The morning remains chill throughout the year. The entire mountain above sarahan is jungle of Pine tree. The King's palace is situated at Sarahan. The place is famous for the Bhimakali temple by the side of the King's palace is an architectural beauty and depicts the inter-mixture of Indian and Tibetan Buddhist style. The locality is small and by the side of the road leading to the temple. Apple is well grown in the area. The jungle beyond Sarahan is the paradise of different kind of Himalayan birds. Light snow fall occurs in winter. The water is supplied to the locality through pipes from the rural water supply system which draws water from the lake on top on the mountain. The trekkers may visit the lake and return in the same evening. There are many shops in the market adjacent to the temple. Its economy depends mostly on tourism and apple.

TRANSPORT: Besides frequent local bus services between Rampur and Sarahan, many long distance services are also available to and from Sarahan. Buses for Hardwar, Chandigarh, Kalka, Shimla, Ambala, etc starts from Sarahan. Hardwar bus starts at 8 AM from Sarahan. The bus from Kalka leaves at 7 AM and it is suitable for the passengers of Kalka Mail. Moreover, other buses from Shimla side pass through Jeori 17 KM away towards Kinnaur. The HRTC Deluxe bus from Chandigarh to Recong Peo leaves Chandigarh at 5.55 AM and reaches Jeori at about 4.30 PM. The buses from Jeori to Sarahan is available at about 1 hour gap in day time. This apart, the taxis are available at Jeori for traveling to Sarahan or elsewhere. The taxi takes 5 hours from Shimla via Fagu, Theog, Narkanda and Rampur.

 

Places of interest: Bhimakali Temple- It is a temple of the Goddess Bhimakali (an incarnation of Goddess Durga), household deity of the Bhushyr kings. The beautiful wooden structure with spectacular carvings attracts a special attention of the tourists from all over the world. The golden image of the Goddess is 210 years old. The original temple structure was damaged by earthquake and a replica has been constructed. Out of two temples one is opened to the devotees. The old dilapidated temple has been demolished recently and work is going on to erect the same again. Navaratri and Dusserah are celebrated in the temple every year. A large festival is held during Dusserah at Sarahan. The museum at the temple complex has good collections of ancient utensils, arms, dresses, etc. The tourists can also visit the regal residence named as Padam Palace.

The Aviary of Himalayan birds: The aviary cum breeding centre of birds has been set up on the mountain at 1 KM away. The Himalayan birds like Monal, Khalij, etc can be seen from a close distance. The aviary remain closed during the breeding season.

The enthusiasts can visit another temple at Dharanghati beyond Sarahan. The road from Gharat goes to Dharanghati at higher altitude. The snow-capped mountain ranges on the north looks beautiful. The Srikhand Mahadev peak is clearly visible from Sarahan. The trekkers may visit the peak in summer.
